Rosanna Graf – Emerging Artist of the Week

Laura Posdziech

Our Emerging Artist of the Week is videoartist Rosanna Graf:

How do you describe your art to somebody who has never seen one of your work?

I mainly work with video, with emphasis on fictional characters which I create and for who I write dialogues for. I’m interested in human existence, analyzing our relationship with the self and our surroundings, focusing on everyday role play. I take great interest in mythological narratives and rituals which I often draw from, be it as base for a character, as visual pattern or as the starting point for new work

What did University and your professors give to you?

Probably the most important thing is meeting new people and being introduced to new mindsets and methods. In the end art academy feels like a voyage of self-discovery, where you have to find out what works for you on your own and you only receive something if you really strive for it. So I guess it’s a good life lesson in general.

What are you currently working on?

Currently I’m thinking about ways to transfer my scenic/text work to stage, working with live performance and play readings. There’s a collaboration planned with a befriended theatre director, with who I’ll be working on a play in which we will combine live acting and videoperformance on the theatre stage.

Gilsuk Ko – Emerging Artist of the Week

Laura Posdziech

Our Emerging Artist of the Week is Gilsuk Ko. Her work depicts the complex relationship human and society entertain with one another through surprising and unpredictable visuals. We had the chance to talk with the artist about her studies and future projects.

Capture d’écran 2016-09-27 à 22.40.00How do you describe your art to somebody who has never seen one of your work?

Video performance is used as technique in all of my pieces of work. By using material from daily life, a link to naturally occurring situations is drawn. The main topic of my works is the human relationship in society, therefore all the works derive from situations or things one can find or witness everyday in society.

Where did you study?
I studied fine art at Hongik University in Seoul and came over to Germany to continue my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Muenster where I graduated this year.

What did University and your professors give to you?
I had the chance to learn all the necessary techniques and work on professional equipment to channel my ideas into a satisfying output. My professors helped me through their reviews and tips about my works. Therefore, the points of interest and their alteration towards a certain topic was always clear.

What are you currently working on?
Even though the main topic I work on is the human relationship in society, the output undergoes a constant change through personal experience and contacts in society. At the moment I focus on negative influences that people apply on me and try to realize a way to support and shield myself through this.

What are your three artists to watch?
Usually I don’t follow specific artists but rather pick out certain works of different artists that I find interesting. Hence I give you the three works I like most at the moment. Sofia Hulten – Altered Fates, Shana Moulton –  The Galactic Pot Healer, Patty Chang – Melons.

What will your artist career look like in five years?

Hopefully I can find more and more suiting ways, images and techniques to fit the work’s intent. Also I try to have exhibitions internationally.

Her multimedia installations are an interface for all of the senses to bound together and connect. We had the pleasure to talk with her about her studies, her new booklet and future projects.

werner_portrait_72dpiHow do you describe your art to somebody who has never seen one of your work?
My artistic work focuses on issues such as identity, migration, foreignness, the city and human beings. My works often revolve around cultural and/or political matters. I am especially interested in processes of change and intermediate states.

One reason for this interest lies within my personal experience. I was born in Switzerland from a Croatian mother and an Austrian father and brought up in Austria. I then studied in Eastern Germany, so that I have experienced migration which influences my artistic work.
Photography and video are two predominant forms of expression. Furthermore, I use text and found footage material that I merge in my multimedia installations.
The foundation of my artistic practice is research. Background information, personal contacts and archival material open new directions for my work.

Where did you study?
I studied Photography under Prof. Tina Bara and Intermedia under Prof. Alba D’Urbano at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in Leipzig

What did University and your professors give to you?
I learned to discuss and be critical. When you work artistically it often requires for you to take a political stance.

What are you currently working on?
I recently finished a self-published interview booklet together with Katharina Brandl an Art Historian and Political Scientist. We speak about my works Neues Europa and The Boys are Back. You can also read it online.

I am currently preparing a new work about the 9/11 memorial and museum in New York. In September I will go to New York to shoot videos and photographs of the area. I also want to interview people about the place.

What are your three artists to watch?
Veronika Burger , Jakub Simcik and Juliana Herrero.

What will your artist career look like in five years?
Hopefully it will look good! With many exhibitions at home and abroad, while being part of federal collections, surrounded by a lot of nice people,…
